Heartbreak for Greece; Costa Rica moves ahead

Greece came very close of making it to the quarterfinal of the FIFA World Cup 2014 but it was K. Navas who prevented them from realizing the dream. A brilliant save during the shoot-out sent the Greeks back in spite of playing entertaining football throughout the match.

The first half went goalless with Costa Rica edging past the Greeks on almost costa-rica vs greece every aspect of the game. But the Greeks stood tall and restricted the Costa Ricans from scoring. But as the second half began, Greece couldn’t keep up the pressure and conceded with the clock ticking over the 52nd minute of the match. Bryan Ruiz was the scorer. He did it against Italy just before half time and this time it was just after the lemon break. It seemed that one goal might be enough for the Costa Ricans to make it o the next round but a red card to Oscar Duarte after the hour mark set the stage for a grandstand finish to the match. Greece suddenly began to look more likely to score than ever. And finally it came in the 1st minute of stoppage time when Papastathopoulos scored after Navas had parried away a shot from one of the Greeks. And dramatically after 90 minutes it was 1-1.

The match rolled on to extra-time and it was not possible o find the winner. Both teams deserved to win but there had to be a winner. And Costa Rica seemed to be the favourite to win it as they had Navas in the goal who is Costa Rica beat Greece to reach Quarterfinalfamous for his antics while defending a penalty. He proved his mettle once again. When it seemed that the penalty shoot-out will go on for eternity an out-of-the-world save gave Costa Rica the crucial advantage. Navas dived to his right and pulled off one of the stunning saves from Gekas with one-hand. Leading 4-3, the Costa Ricans needed to score from the final spot-kick to make it to the quarters. Umana did it with ease as Costa Rica set up quarterfinal date with Netherlands. This is really going to be a hard test for Costa Rica but they have already earned the reputation of playing well against the big names. They did it twice in the group stage-against England and Italy. The Costa Ricans can dream. It’s surely going to be an intriguing game of football when these two good teams will come across each other in the quarters.
