Making his first public appearance after a two month long sabbatical, the Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi finally addressed the farmers on Sunday. The rally was held in the Ramlila Maidan, in New Delhi, where a huge crowd of farmers was present. Rahul Gandhi said that he and his party will fight a “decisive battle” on farmers’ issues including the NDA’s Land Acquisition Bill.

Rahul Gandhi, Congress President Sonia Gandhi and former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh were present in the rally amongst others. Congress leader Akhilesh Pratap Singh began the rally by talking about how Congress is the only political party that cares for the farmers. The major target during this rally was the NDA’s Land Acquisition Bill.

The speeches began at around 10 am and the rally was concluded by 1 pm.

Deependar Hooda of the Congress party spoke about Farmer Compensation. He said,”Also adequate compensation should be provided to farmers who have suffered loss due to rains and hailstorms.” Dr.Manmohan Singh arrived at the rally at around 12 pm and addressed the farmers. He said,” Congress has always fought for the rights of farmers and under Soniaji and Rahulji’s leadership, we will be successful.” He also said that during poll campaigning, PM Modi used to go around saying they will work for farmers but nothing of that sort happened.

He further added,”Congress has always worked for the farmers, with the farmers. Governments in the past have always stood with the farmers in their hour of need.”

Many accusations against PM Narendra Modi and BJP were made. The Modi government was blamed for not caring about the farmers. Former PM Manmohan Singh said that this rally was organised for the farmers and that all of them had gathered to fight against the ‘anti-farmer policies of Modi govt’.

At around 12:30, Congress VP Rahul Gandhi started his speech by expressing his sadness about Modi visiting various foreign countries and wiping the garbage of 50 years. “It took 2 years to make this Land Bill of 2013. The BJP supported and applauded the Bill then. Then what changed?” asked Gandhi.

Passing the baton to his mother, Sonia Gandhi began her speech at 12:45 pm and started by thanking the farmers for coming to this rally. She said.”I know this is harvest season. Despite that, you have come in large numbers. I thank you for this.” She claims that the Modi sarkar’s attitude is totally anti-farmer and anti-poor.

Due to the policies of Modi sarkar, there is a widespread Urea shortage in this country, she said. She also said that The government has refused to buy wheat of this year’s rabi crop, but is doing agreements with America and Australia for importing it. She concluded her speech and the rally by chants of “Jai Hind” and earning a big round of applause from the presentees.
