Jama Masjid Blast case: Police get 20 days extension for further probe

New Delhi/ Mumbai: According to the latest development into the investigations of 2010 Jama Masjid Blast case, a Delhi Court has given a 20 days extension to the police to investigate into the case.

2010 Jama Masjid BlastThe police suspect that arrested Indian Mujahideen co-founder Yasin Bhatkal and its member Asadullah Akhtar have a hand in the Jama Masjid Blast case. To clear this doubt and further probe into it, the Special Cell of the Delhi Police had filed an application in the Court seeking permission for  20 more days to probe the accused.  The Delhi Police, before the court, claimed that the Pressure Cooker bomb was prepared and kept in the Maruti 800 car parked outside the Jama Masjid, near a transformer, was done by Bhatkal.

The police also stated that the material used to prepare the circuits; the timers fitted in the Improvised Explosive Device (IED), was purchased by Yasin and his aide Akhtar from Delhi’s Lajpat Rai Market.

After having read the application and hearing the plea of the Delhi Police, Additional Sessions Judge Daya Prakash granted 20 days to the police.

Meanwhile leading newspaper Times of India reported that Intelligence agencies have said that Yasin Bhatkal continues to be a threat. The news item says that Yasin has capability to motivate youths to join the terror network.

bhatkal-10_660_083013033721Yasin Bhatkal was arrested by Indian investigative agencies and is the alleged founder leader of the proscribed terrorist organization Indian Mujahideen (IM). He was listed on the NIA Most Wanted until his arrest on the India-Nepal border near Motihari, Bihar on 28 August 2013. Yasin undertook arms and explosive training in Pakistan in 2006 to launch terror attacks.

Since his arrest, he has been in Tihar jail.

•    Jama Masjid Blast:

The incident takes us back to 2010 when on September 19th, two motorcycle borne gunmen fired at a bus comprising of a TV crew of Taiwan, near gate number 3, injuring two Taiwanese. Three hours later, a minor blast was reported from close to the location and a Maruti 800 car, with 120 liters of Petrol caught fire.

The Jama Masjid Blast probably has some links to the Batla House Encounter that had happened in 2008 on the same date – 19th September. A suspected Indian Mujhahideen member Atif Amin was killed.

•    Can Waqas complete the missing links?

Riyaz-ul-Rehman aka Waqas, a terrorist who was arrested by the Police on 22nd March this year might complete the missing links into the Jama Masjid Blast case, the police say. Waqas was arrested from Ajmer station while he was trying to flee to Pakistan.

Let’s not forget that in Jama Masjid Blast, an IED was used and it is said that Waqas is an expert in preparing these IED’s. Thus the police doubt that WaqasWaqas could reveal some details that can complete the missing links into the case.

The Indian Express quoted the Special Cell’s plea: “It is further stated that on March 22, wanted accused Waqas was arrested in case FIR number 54/11 (regarding illegal arms factory here) and is on police custody remand in that case. He has to be arrested in this case. With the arrest of this wanted terrorist, the missing links in the conspiracy are likely to be established which requires that period of investigation and judicial custody of these accused persons (Bhatkal and Akhtar) be extended.”

It seems that the police would soon crack down all the missing facts which would complete this case. Indeed, terror attacks are unfortunate through which the innocent lives suffer. Terror attacks should be prevented and terrorists conducting gruesome attacks deserve severe punishments.
