IRCTC site hacked, colleges’ too- What’s with the Cyber world?

Apparently, on Thursday, the website of Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation made headlines as reports spread across stating it’s site to be hacked. According to the sources who have been divulging pieces of information in the case, personal details of around 1 crore individuals are said to have been hacked. While irctc-logo-635-90283some of the IRCTC officials continue to deny the news, discarding them as mere rumours, the others fear that personal information, including contact numbers, date of birth and else other have been ‘sold’ and shipped across in a compact disk (CD), priced at Rs 15,000, to  whosoever was interested.

Not just IRCTC, the official websites of many institutions and corporations have been stated to be hacked, that have resulted into pivotal details being leaked. Sites of educational institutions such as IIT-B of Mumbai and few other reputed colleges in the city were said to be hacked, at a point of time; however the majority reports being later flushed out, naming them to be fake. An American organisation- Identity Theft Resource Centre’s President and CEO Eva Velasquez states that it’s really difficult to say who’s been better- whether there has really been an increase in the number of data breaches, or detecting and reporting incidents, in a statement to the media.

The most shocking data-hacking news that surfaced was probably when the Islamic state’s site had been hacked, with anonymous hackers taking over the control on Internet completely and replacing the information available with an advert for Viagra. The programmers had to told hard initially since their site was on the ‘dark web’, and after days of persistent diligence, they took down the site.
