7 people confirmed dead in Kashmir floods, heavier rains expected

Mercury descended with rain water in several parts of northern India, including Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. 7 people have been reported dead due to house-collapse and land slides.

The authorities finally declared a flood situation after river Jhelum reached 18.00 ft at around 3 am on Monday. The water level of river Jhelum at 6 am at Sangam (South Kashmir) and Ram Munshi Bagh, Srinagar (Srinagar city) had touched 22.4 ft and 18.8 ft respectively. The danger level at Sangam is listed as 21 ft and at Ram Mushi Bagh it is listed at 18ft.

Continuous rains from the past 36 hours has led to flooding of several areas in Kashmir causing panic among the people.

Chief Minister Mufti Sayeed said one person died and 10 others are trapped in the debris of a house which collapsed in Laldan area of Budgam district of Kashmir valley due to floods. Police later said that six persons have died while 13 other people are believed to be trapped in the debris after a landslide brought down four houses in Budgam.

The state government swung into action with eight teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and rushed to the site to help and rescue.

As the day progressed, rainfall ceased in Srinagar and the authorities announced that the water level had declined at Sangam and Ram Munshi Bagh.

“Water level in Jhelum which had touched the flood levels at Sangam and Ram Munshi Bagh is showing a declining or static trend,” an official spokesman said.

The overcast conditions prevailed throught the day and the temperatures settled within comfortable levels after overnight rains.

The Jammu and Kashmir government has sanctioned Rs. 235 cr for the crisis.

“I have authorized release of Rs 225 crore in favour of Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir and Rs 10 crore in favour of Divisional Commissioner, Jammu and SDRF (State Disaster Relief Fund) for rescue and relief,” said CM Mufti Sayee while making a statement on the flood situation.
