Yakub Memon hanged at Nagpur Central Jail

1993 Bomb Blast convict Yakub Memon was hanged earlier in the day after the Supreme Court turned down his last mercy plea. An hour and a half after the Apex Court’s pre-dawn hearing rejected the mercy plea, Memon was hanged at the Nagpur Central Jail.

The execution took place at 6:30 am and at 7:01am doctors declared Yakub Memom dead. The Judicial Magistrate and DIG of Maharashtra witnessed the hanging, as Memon became the first convict of the 1993 blast to be hanged.

Memon’s brothers Usman and Suleiman were at Nagpur Central Jail to complete the formalities and receive the body after his post mortem.

Yakub Memon’s funeral will be conducted in Mumbai and permissions have been granted to take his mortal remains from Nagpur to Mumbai, where his family is based. The body will be brought to Mumbai in an air ambulance after which it will be handed over to the family. However, certain conditions have been laid, taking into account public security and safety. First, the body will not be taken at his residence; Second, no funeral procession will be held and Third, no pictures regarding the same will be made public.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is likely to make a statement in the Maharashtra Assembly on this.

Meanwhile, security arrangements in Mumbai and Nagpur have been tightened, with police officials being deployed at each and every sensitive location. Spectralhues has learned that the Intelligence Bureau is closely monitoring all the posts on social media – be it Whatsapp, Facebook or Twitter. Strict actions will be initiated against those indulging in making inflamatory, provocative speeches and derogatory remarks on this.

Security has been specially levelled up around the area where Yakub Memon’s family is based in Mumbai. Police officials have already rounded up repeated offenders and miscreants, especially those with a criminal record.
