President to decide on Yakub Memon’s mercy plea ahead of execution

Yakub Memon

Yakub Memon’s lawyers have filed a fresh petition in the Apex court challenging the Maharashtra government’s decision to reject Memon’s mercy petition. Yakub Memon, according to the orders, is to be hanged tomorrow. However, his lawyers are to ask for a stay on the execution as the fresh mercy plea filed by him is still pending before President Pranab Mukherjee.

Meanwhile, the BJP government at the center has apparently advised the President to reject Memon’s mercy plea. Reportedly, Home Minister Rajnath Singh conveyed to President Pranab Mukherjee the government’s view that his mercy plea be rejected.

The Prime Minister, Home Minister and other top level officials met today, at Prime Minister’s residence at 7 Race Course Road. The issue of Yakub Memon’s mercy plea was discussed and it concluded that the President be advised to reject the plea.

As the scheduled time for Memon’s execution approached, thorough discussions went on Wednesday. Yakub Memon is scheduled to be hanged on Thursday morning at the Nagpur Central Jail, where the preparations for his execution have already happened.
