Home Minister Rajnath Singh to visit the ‘red zone’

Union home minister Rajnath Singh is most likely to travel to the Naxal region of Sukma in Chhattisgarh the next week, only a fortnight later Prime Minister Narendra Modi toured the neighbouring district of Dantewada.

According to official sources in the home ministry office, the Union Minister is scheduled to inaugurate a police station that has been fortified and secured well in the ‘Maoist-infested’ district. It had been initiated as a part of a centrally financed project for fortification or restructuring of around 400 police stations, with the expense reaching approximately the value of Rs 2 crore each, in over 80 worst-hit districts spread across nine states.

“By inaugurating the fortified police station, the Centre will send out a message to the Maoists and local population about its making inroads into the Naxal stronghold with a larger security presence as well as its intention to push development schemes there,” according to a home ministry official.

Sukma has been a constant target of violent strikes by CPI (Maoist) and also others. The home minister is expected to address a press conference from there, as part of the government’s campaign, to showcase its achievements made in the first year of its reign.
