Mudslides in certain areas are heckling the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, after the flood waters began receding, affecting the rescue operation and causing people a lot of trouble. As a result of these mudslides, 10 people are feared to be buried alive.

“Water level in Jhelum which had touched the flood levels at Sangam and Ram Munshi Bagh is showing a declining or static trend,” an official spokesman said.

Six months ago, a bigger, but similar disaster had occurred in the same region, which was the worst flooding ever seen in a century.

In the Budgam district, 7 bodies have been pulled out from the mud while 13 more people are feared dead. 16 more may have been trapped as the remaining slush from the mountains has caused 2 homes to collapse.

Evacuation of the region was forced by the heavy rains causing many families to scatter. Schools in the area were cancelled on Monday and Tuesday.

The Jammu-Kashmir highway was blocked due to the situation and the NDRF teams have been sent to help the local administration in clearing the situation. Home Minister Rajnath Singh told a local official that relief materials are being flown into the area to help victims.

Local meteorologists have warned residents that the heavy rains will continue, though they might not be as intense as they are currently. The death toll in 3 days has reached to 16.
