Lawyers ML Sharma and AK Singh were each sent a notice for making such disgraceful remarks in the documentary made by the BBC.
The documentary consisted of various people talking about the probe. Jyoti Singh’s (Nirbhaya) parents, a close friend, the two defence lawyers, Mukesh Singh (rape-accused), criminals’ parents, police, etc were interviewed for this documentary.
The council met last night and has given the lawyers three weeks time to explain why action should not be taken against them. Fellow lawyers want their (Sharma and Singh) licenses to be revoked. People are demanding on several social media sites that the lawyers should be punished.
Mr Sharma today confirmed that he hasn’t received any notice yet and that his views have been misrepresented. “She (Leslie Udwin, director of the film) took my interview for 10 days, showed only one line.” He feels that there was no ‘professional misconduct’ on his part.
Mr Singh, on the other hand, called those condemning him as ‘biased’ while claiming that many had called him to let him know that they were in support of his remarks.
Both the lawyers are defending the four men on death row for gang-raping and killing Jyoti Singh, a 23 year old medical student. She was raped brutally and then was thrown out of the bus thinking she was dead, said one of her offenders. India named her ‘Nirbhaya’ which means ‘fearless’ and she became a symbol for India’s fight against women.
Shashi Tharoor, former union minister slammed the Modi government and said,”No, the ban was not justified. The government has embarrased the country with its disgraceful conduct on this matter by sending Indian court order to foreign countries where democracy permits greater freedom of expression. This kind of thin skinned attitude is really disgraceful.”
Even the Editor’s Guild of India has called the ban ‘unwarranted’.
