Indian Embassy in Afghanistan attacked; staff safe

 

Afghanistan: Three gun borne militants open fired on the Indian Consulate building in Afghanistan’s Herat city this morning. Three gunmen who reportedly had machineguns and rocket propelled grenades targeted the Indian Embassy in Afghanistan and open fired in the premises from a nearby house.

The security personnel around the Indian consulate got into action and immediately began to fire on the militants.

This attack on the Indian embassy took place in Herat city of Afghanistan where the Indian consulate is located. Herat is the third largest city of Afghanistan and is considered to be a safe place. The city of Herat lies close to the Afghanistan-Iran border and is considered to be a safe city.

According to the details with Spectralhues, though exchanges of fire took place between the security officials and the militants on the ground. One militant has been shot dead by the police. However, the other two stood successful in fleeing away through the neighbouring buildings. All the staff inside the consulate remained safe.

As of now it is not clear that who planned this attack on the Indian Consulate and which terror organization is behind it.

A tweet from Syed Akbaruddin, Minister of External Affairs said, “#India‘s Consulate in Herat, #Afghanistan attacked. Brave ITBP personnel and Afghan soldiers rebut attackers. All safe. Operation underway.”

Another of his tweet informed that Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh is monitoring situations and PM-designate Narendra Modi spoke to Amb. Sinha in Afghanistan following this incident.

This attack comes as Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai said that he will be attending the oath ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In the previous year, on September 13, a similar attack took place on the United States embassy in Afghanistan. Nearly 19 people had been killed in the attack but the staff remained safe.
