Passengers injured as ‘train arrives on the platform’ in Mumbai

Around five passengers have been injured after a Mumbai suburban train rammed into a hydraulic buffer on platform number 3 at the Churchgate station at11.20 a.m. on Sunday.

While three of the passengers were provided immediate first aid, the rest two were referred to the hospital and later discharged as no serious injury was reported. The first compartment of the train apparently tilted upwards from the impact of collision with the buffers at the dead-end of the station, where suburban trains on the western line end.

As per preliminary findings, the authorities said that motorman L.S. Tiwari seemed to have lost control of the locomotive as it entered the station.

“He did not report any brake failure or any problem when the train stopped at Marine Lines, the penultimate station, which is just one km from Churchgate. According to his statement, he could not control the train. He did not apply the brakes at the right moment when the train entered Churchgate. Only a detailed inquiry can establish what exactly led to this incident,” Shailendra Kumar, Divisional Railway Manager, Western Railways, told in his statement to media.

The motorman, a guard and a locomotive inspector have been suspended. Senior officers rushed to the site to monitor restoration work, a railway spokesperson stated. Following the accident, local train services were badly hit as trains ran late compelling many commuters to get off the trains and take taxis.
