students before burning them to death. Attorney General showed the video tapes of the confession made by the three.

Recently six bags full of human remains were found at Iguala, from where the students went missing.

“They didn’t just burn the bodies with their clothes, they also burned the clothes of those who participated,” Mr. Murillo was quoted by Reuters as saying this. He also informed that the perpetrators have erased every possible trace.

Police and Mayor involved?

The roots of this case take us back to 26th September when these students went on to protest at Iguala, a city in the state Guerrero. These students from Raúl Isidro Burgos Rural Teachers Collegehad been there to protest against discriminatory hiring and funding practices by the government.

On the same day, Iguala Mayor, Mr Jose Luis Abarca’s wife was going to deliver a speech at an annual conference in the city. The mayor wanted to avoid the protesting students from disrupting the speech. Hence, he is believed to have instructed the police to deal with the students. While dealing with the protest, a clash broke down between the police and students.

According to a BBC report, eyewitnesses described seeing them (the students) being bundled into police cars. This happened after the clash and shootout. Reportedly, the police then handed these students over to the gang which is being accused of killing the students.

As investigation into this case proceeded, an arrest warrant was issued against the Mayor and his wife, and also the Police chief of Iguala, Mr Felipe Flores.

Modus operandi:

In their confession, the three gang members have confessed that the students were taken to a landfill. Some had already suffocated and the others were killed by them before setting all them on fire. BBC quoted Mr Murillo as saying, “The fire lasted from midnight to 2 pm the next day. The criminals could not handle the bodies (for three hours) due to head. The suspects then crushed the remains, stuffed them into bags and tossed them in a river.”

The attorney general identified the three gang members who confessed as Missing Mexican StudentsPatricio Reyes Landa, Jhonatan Osorio Gomez and Agustin Garcia Reyes.

The culprits made use of petrol, wood, tyres and plastic for burning them and the inferno is said to have lasted for 14 hours.

Mr Murillo also informed that the high level of degradation caused by the fire in the remains they found make it very difficult to extract the DNA that will allow an identification.

“I know the enormous pain the information we’ve obtained causes the family members, a pain we all share,” he added.

This incident has led to President Enrique Pena Nieto cancelling his China visit. He has promised for strict actions against all the culprits.
