Diplomatic efforts to resolve Syria crisis intensify on Wednesday after U.N. investigators confirms that Assad Government did use chemical weapon to kill its own people including several children in the ongoing civil war.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke on phone and discussed strategy to destroy chemical weapon.
US, Britain, China, France and Russia are set to meet in Geneva to try to finalise the resolution on Russia’s plan for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government to give up its chemical weapons.
According to Reuters the meet could issue an ultimatum to Assad to hand over his chemical weapons.
While speaking on Tuesday at the Senate President Barack Obama asked Congress to hold voting on military action in Syria to give let diplomacy a last chance.
“If we fail to act, the Assad regime will see no reason to stop using chemical weapons. As the ban against these weapons erodes, other tyrants will have no reason to think twice about acquiring poison gas and using them,” said Obama in his speech.
“It’s too early to tell whether this offer will succeed. And any agreement must verify that the Assad regime keeps its commitments. But this initiative has the potential to remove the threat of chemical weapons without the use of force, particularly because Russia is one of Assad’s strongest allies,” said Obama.
