Wednesday saw the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan proclaiming an urgent state of emergency for a period of three-months. This comes in after failed attempts to take immediate actions against those who have been held responsible for the previous week’s rather bloody ‘coup’.
President Erdogan made this news of his live, in front of his ministry, which followed a National Security Council meet that lasted nearly five hours. On being asked as to why an emergency was imposed, Erdogan stated that this was entirely done in line and accordance with the Turkish constitution and did not violate basic freedom of its citizens or any other law as such.
The state of emergency, a law, comes into implementation after it has been published in the nation’s official gazette, and which shall allow the President and his ministry to overrule their Parliament in ‘passing new laws and to limit or suspend rights and freedoms as they deem necessary.’
