Trump comes a step closer to the final leg of the US Presidential election
With a spiraling victory in the Indiana constituency, Donald J. Trump, a former hotel baron and billionaire has caused his main rival in this historic election, Ted Cruz to give up his race to the White House. An increasingly controversial political force,Trump, reveling in his seventh state-wide achievement addressed his supporters from Trump Tower in New York,” We’re going to win in November, and we’re going to win big, and it’s going to be America first.”
Having already won Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island, Trump made a massive victory with 51 out 57 Republican candidates in Indiana, bringing his overall delegate total to 1,047, barely short of the 1,237 candidates required to claim the White House. Cruz, at the time of withdrawal had won over 565 candidates, while the other Republican forerunner, Kasich had just 153 delegates on his side. Given his opinions about deporting 11 million illegal immigrants, building a wall to curb Mexican immigrants and his poor behaviour towards women, his rising popularity has left a faction of the Republican party bewildered and faithless and if Trump is officially introduced as the Presidential party nominee, his primitive job would be to bring together all factions of his party.
The Republican National Committee Chairman, Reince Priebus, tweeted after the Indiana results,” We need to unite and focus (on defeating Democrat Clinton),” while referring to Trump as the ‘presumptive Presidential candidate’. This opinion was reiterated by the victor, a former reality TV star, with an unusual lack of pompousness in his victory speech, ” We’re going after Hillary Clinton. She will not be a great president, she will not be a good president, she will be a poor president. She doesn’t understand trade.” Trump believes Indiana to be a ‘tremendous victory’.
Meanwhile, Indiana was a disappointment for Hillary Clinton, a former Secretary of State, the Democratic forerunner. She was beat by her opponent, Bernie Sanders, who secured a 53.2% vote as compared to Clinton’s 46.8%. At the same time, Clinton remains ahead in the race towards the Presidential nomination from her party, with a marginal lead in her overall delegate count.
Since the wave of public support was largely directed towards Trump, Cruz was forced into deciding to forfeit his campaign. Said the defeated politician,” We left it all on the field in Indiana.We gave it everything we’ve got, but the voters chose another path. And so with a heavy heart, but with boundless optimism for the long-term future of our nation, we are suspending our campaign.”
Donald Trump, a man with no past experience with public office, will cover the last stop in his long campaign in California, when the state votes on June 7. Despite this extreme change in trends, Ohio Governor John Kasich has promised to remain in the race as a final opponent to the Trump wave.
