Mexico’s Pemex plants have a history of blasts and fires. Know more.

Wednesday’s blast that shattered the Pemex plant in Mexico and has left several workers dead, isn’t the first blast at the site of a Pemex plant.

The ruined plant specialized in the production of vinyl chloride, a chemical used further in the production of PVC pipes and packaging material, and is dangerous in itself.

In the past, Pemex plants throughout the country have suffered several blast and fires.

In September 2012, 33 workers had been killed at one of Pemex’s gas plants in the north-Mexican state of Tamaulipas due to an explosion, followed by a massive fire.

Then, in January 2013, 37 people were left dead due to a huge gas blast at Pemex’s headquarters in Mexico City.

In  2015, a series of fires had gutted several of its oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico.

Recently, in February 2016, a worker was killed at the Veracruz plant itself, because of a blaze.
