Former President and a man who inspired many, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, passed away in a hospital in Meghalaya, on Monday. Dr Kalam passed away following a cardiac arrest that he suffered during a lecture function at IIM-Shillong. He was 83.

Dr Kalam was the President of India from 2002-2007 and is looked up to by millions as an inspiration.

On hospitalization, doctors at the Bethnany hospital, where he was taken, declared he had suffered a massive heart attack. He was immediately taken to the ICU. “President Kalam was brought to the hospital at 7 pm. When he brought in there was no sign of life. He was taken to ICU to try and revive him, which was futile,” hospital sources told NDTV.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “India mourns the loss of a great scientist, a wonderful President & above all an inspiring individual. RIP Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.”

“Our country has lost great human being who made phenomenal contribution to promotion of self reliance in defence technologies. I worked very closely with Dr. Kalam as PM and I greatly benefitted from his advice as Pres of our country. His life and work will be remembered for generations to come,” Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh said, as quoted and tweeted by ANI.
