Several hundreds of Yazidi captives have been brutally killed in Iraq by Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militants, in the western part of Mosul, according to Yazidi and Iraqi officials.

A statement released by the Yazidi Progress Party (YPP) stated that around 300 captives were executed in the Tal Afar district surrounding the city, on Friday. Thousands of members belonging to minority groups had been taken into captivity last year. The method of their deaths still remains under ambiguity.

Their deaths have been condemned by many, with the Iraqi Vice-President Osama al-Nujaifi described the reported deaths as “horrific and barbaric”.

Many are reported to have been held in Mosul, the main stronghold and base camp of IS after the militants swept through vast parts of northern and western Iraq, and eastern Syria, last year.

Yazidis are people whose religions have various elements belonging to different faiths have been continuously considered as  ‘infidels’ by the Islamic State.

Thousands fled to the Kurdish-controlled region of northern Iraq after IS took charge of the Yazidi-populated Sinjar district in Nineveh province. Hundreds were killed, while some Yazidi women were held and being used as nothing more than sex slaves.
