The 28-year-old woman named Farkhunda was accused of burning the religious book Koran, although witnesses state that they were baseless allegations.
Of the defendants who appeared in court in Kabul, around 19 wof them were police officials who had been accused of failing in their respective duties to prevent the brutal ‘murder’. The death has sparked controversies all over and has also led to wide protests against the treatment of women and the injustice inflicted to them.
Farkhunda, apparently, was beaten to death and her body was burned on 19 March.
Her death had been a result of arguing with a mullah of a mosque, or religious teacher, about his practice of selling fake charms to women at a shrine. In the course of the heated argument, she was accused of burning the Koran and a crowd overheard the conversation and brutally attacked her.
An official investigator stated that the claims were baseless and also that there was no evidence she burned the Koran.
The accused wore dark clothes given to them in prison. Two of the men stated that they had been forced to sign confessions under duress. The proceedings were also telecasted live on national television.
