The Return of the Idiot Box: Fall Edition

The TV Fall season is back and we could not be more excited. With many shows coming back after being renewed for another season to some exciting new projects, the premier week had everyone expecting great things from it. While some were successful in delivering the perfect premier, some did not quite live up to their hype.  Here are the top five shows we were excited about and how they performed in their first week.

The Big Bang Theorybig-bang

We were all pretty excited to see what would happen when Mary and Alfred returned home to confront their children in the morning, about finally, after 10 seasons, meeting Penny’s family, but honestly, it didn’t quite live up to the expectations. When we found out about the castings for Penny’s mother and brother, we were all very thrilled. Though the actors make the best of their role, they do not really blend in well with the already ensemble cast. The best comic reliefs came from the duo of Howard and Raj, who thought that the US Airforce was out to get them. Bernadett and Amy also got a chance to display their comic timings. The wedding was a perfect mix of hysterical, awkward and romantic. So to conclude, I think they did their best with whatever they had, and for one of the most widely watched TV shows, they had a lot of high expectations to live up to and in a way they did good. Good, but not great.

How to Get Away With Murder

The most lovable murderers on television are back and boy, are we just getting started. The first episode had all the things that make this such a thrilling legal-murder drama. The season wastes no time in throwing light upon how-to-get-awayhow things went down during the last seasons cliff-hanger(though we cannot really be sure that Frank killed Wallace). We are also shown what each character did during their holiday and also, what are fierce leading lady was up to.  She is so chill that despite the fact that fliers calling her a killer are posted all around the campus, all she has to say is “At least they got a good picture.” Though the episode starts out as a normal-paced one, all hell breaks loose in the last 20 minutes when the most adorable couple breakup and we are left with Annalise, screaming her heart out after seeing a dead body that came from her burning house. I think she deserves an Emmy nomination simply based on that final scream. As a member of Shondaland and also a television enthusiast, this was one hell of a season opener.

The Good Place

tgpA deceased woman is sent to heaven or the ‘Good Place’ by mistake and must hide her selfish deed of earth to avoid being sent to the bad side. A new, fresh concept which could have gone wrong for a number of reasons, it actually manages to makes us laugh. The things she does to keep staying in the good place actually make her a likable character, even though she wasn’t one on Earth. Kristen Bell does justice to her role as Eleanor Shellstrop. Despite being a comedy, it has a touch of ‘keep-you-guessing’ and that just helps it more. Based on the first episode, it is safe to say that we can get through this show without any pity laughs for our gorgeous leading lady.

Marvel’s Agents of Shield

aosThe agents are back and it is absolutely clear form the season premier that this season is going to be darker and edgier and most of that darkness belongs to our latest baddie, The Ghost Rider. Played by Gabriel Luna, this anti-hero wastes no times in showing that he means business. When someone spends most of their first on-screen time ripping off bodies like their Christmas presents, we can definitely see more and more people rooting for the darkside.  Also, after most of the last 3 seasons in the realms of science, the franchise is finally branching out and moving towards magic and mysticism. Let us all just hope that they continue to build on such a fantastic season premier. (Also, please bring Marie Hill back)

This Is Us

this-is-usThe most buzzed about show of the fall quickly connects with its viewers based on the realism in it. Much like your mood swings, it changes from utter happiness to devastating scenes pretty quickly, but that just highlights that our real lives are much like these reel ones, helping them establish a bond with their audience. We have a pregnant couple who lose one of their babies (they were supposed to have triplets) but they have no idea about what awaits them in the hospital. We have Kevin, an actor stuck in a sitcom which is way below his potential, Randall who has anger issues stemming from his father abandoning him as a child and finally, we have the lovable, overweight Kate, who just seems to put on weight no matter how hard she tries. What stands out the most from this premier is how real and raw all the characters and their emotions are. In their happy moments, you can see one of yours and one of their sad ones may remind you about one of yours. If the pilot is anything to go by, I think it was definitely worth the buzz as they have done an excellent job of delivering real characters in a time where the television is filled with some quite over-the-top ones.
