Movie review: Interstellar

With dying resources everyday science is in search of a new planet where there is a possibility of life so as to extradite human population in the hope of survival and continuation of human generation.

Hence all the expeditions to other planets and satellites are being carried on. And in this aspect we can also consider the theory of light and time travel. Sunlight even with its gigantic speed and ability to travel through vacuum takes about 8 sec to reach earth. Some studies suggest that if one can travel with speed more than light he can time travel.

Interstellar, 2014 sci-fi directed by Christopher Nolan, starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Mackenzie Foy, John Lithgow and Michael Caine explores all these scientific equations to raise a question in us about the possibility of extinction of human race and the possibility of its survival.

Judgement day has long been in discussion. And even here we find the possibility of world’s extinction. Former Nasa pilot Copper, the protagonist lives with his father in law, his teenage son and 10 yr old Murphy in a farm house. Murphy considers that her room is haunted which she and her father would later realise to be magnetic waves being send by someone. These waves would somehow direct them to secret NASA centre where they would come across a plan by the head Professor Brand that might save the mankind by travelling through a hole created by the aliens who may lead to new planet.

Interstellar astronauts explore new planet

Cooper was chosen as the pilot for the mission with, Brands daughter biologist Amelia, scientist Romily and Doyle. They went to the planet Miller in a different galaxy but it had a serve time duration, one hour in the planet was 7 years in earth. They find the planet inhospitable for human survival since the shallow ocean of the planet had big tidal waves, which caused them to lose Doyle in a tragic accident and also forcing their space shuttle to delay for couple of hours and as a result 23 years passed in earth and Coopers children were now adults, and the cute little fathers favourite Murphy was now NASA scientist. She would eventually come to know that Brands plan of new settlement would fail. Brand in his death bed would also confess that his equations has failed and there would never be a possibility of transportation of human society in a different galaxy and the men on the mission has to go for plan B that is to start a new human generation.

Anne Hathaway

On a different galaxy Cooper and Amelia would find scientist Mann who would try to kill Cooper and would himself die while fleeing after killing Romilly. Amelia and Cooper would try to set Endurance around Gargantua on a course toward Edmunds by gravity since they were out on fuel also would set robots in black hole to collect data. On the last moment Cooper thinking they would die separated Amelia from the shuttle and he emerged in a tesseract which would give him glimpse of his past with his daughter. Both he and his daughter would realise that the ghost that haunted Murphy in childhood was in fact a signal sent by Cooper himself asking to rescue him. Murphy would eventually solve Brands equation and would save the human civilization. Cooper would be rescued after a long time when his biological age on earth would be 124 years he met his daughter Murphy who is on the verge of death and very old. She asked her to find Amelia. And so Cooper sets on the mission again.

All in all a very interesting movie but slow at times. However, I would definitely like to watch it once more. And can safely conclude Christopher Nolan did it once again. A pure genius of a man.
