Movie Review: Alone

The best horror movies (very few of them) have always been ones which gave you the jitters when you least expected it. The paranormal and anything related to it can be the most interesting genre if tackled well. Instead, film-makers tend to stray away from the very essence that makes these movies both enduring and endearing- Fear. Talking about Bollywood, scare-fests have never really been scary barring a alonefew; blame it on songs, silly unnecessary emotions or just the fact that there is no originality here. After a lukewarm ‘1920: Evil Returns’ followed by a successful ‘Ragini MMS 2’, Director Bhushan Patel remakes a Thai movie of the same name. Had it been copied well and delivered what it promised in the trailer, ‘Alone’ could have been a decent watch. Alas!

Sanjana (Bipasha Basu; does she consider the name lucky for her horror movies?) and Anjana (Bipasha again) are conjoined twins who promise never to separate from each other. Things go awry when they both fall for the same guy- Kabir (Karan Singh Grover). An accident occurs and Anjana dies. Years later, Sanjana with Kabir (now married not too happily) is compelled to come back home when her mother is admitted to a hospital. But something isn’t right in the house.

There is not a single scene here that makes you jump out of your seat; forget about getting spooked, ‘Alone’ is unintentionally funny. Dialogues make it funnier on a few occasions. Add to that, the silly plot. What on earth was the Director thinking while filming it? And what were the actors expecting? ‘Ragini MMS 2’ did turn out to be a money-churner; an average fare which drew the crowd with its cocktail of sex and horror. But even that made some sense. ‘Alone’ doesn’t work at any level- neither as a love story nor a horror revenge drama. Bipasha playing the ghost is just another attempt at a scary face; we have seen them earlier (Vikram Bhatt does it quite well). So the ghost with white eyes, black teeth and rotted skin doesn’t work as well. And alone4how come she looked the same old Bipasha in the climax? Emotional connect… eh! The twist in the end is the only saving grace in this otherwise terrible movie; it still makes you feel there was a plot written somewhere and probably, Patel found it after filming the entire movie.

Bipasha Basu has her expressions all wrong yet again and so tries to compensate for her lack of acting abilities by some skin show and lip-lock. While doing that, she looks sensuous. Karan Singh Grover’s big screen debut is confident but he is lost. What else do you expect when he is made to say the same dialogue almost every ten minutes- “Kuch samajh mein nahi aa raha hain main kya karoo?” So lost is he that when he comes to know his wife is possessed, he doesn’t even appear shocked. He appears lost. The funniest performance here comes from Zakir Hussain as a psychologist. He has the most hilarious lines (of course unintentionally). Even the supporting cast gives us some laughs.

Watch it or not: Horror movie freaks… Not even in your nightmares… You will laugh! For others… there are even worse movies than this… watch them if you are craving for a migraine!

At the Box-Office: Flop

This one’s about a lovelorn and somewhat horny ghost who is alone. Don’t catch up with her.

About Abhirup Dhar

I don't watch movies... I live them! Let me introduce myself. Abhirup Dhar was born in Kolkata and is still being brought up in India. A banker by profession, he is filmy to the core and is passionate about reviewing movies and writing. He likes to live on his own… he likes to be blunt, sarcastic, famous, infamous, confident, over-confident, moody at times… he likes to be himself. He is imperfect because perfection is boring. His love for movies dates back to his childhood days when he studied in a boarding school. A three-month Winter Vacation every year… and he made sure he watched as many movies then. Parents thought it was a phase... he knew it was Passion and he knew it back then itself. The craziness to watch movies on the Big Screen began during the last two years of school when he literally bunked to town so that he could catch up with the new Hindi Movie releases. Some thought he was plain crazy. He confirmed it was Passion... yet again. The hard fact is that not always can you walk a path you are passionate about. You have expectations to fulfill and Life to be made. But Life gives you chances and you have to grab them. So... here is he... your friendly critic who will be giving you his Verdict every week so that you can decide which release is worth your moolah and which is not! See you at the Movies!
