Movie Review: Gabbar Is Back

To start with I am not the biggest lover of recent Bollywood movies. Though I am Akshay Kumar fan but Hindi movies mostly have disappointed me a lot in recent times, and the few which I liked looked so damn similar to some superhit Hollywood movies. Let’s use the word “co-incidence” and “inspired” to describe that.

Coming back to the movie, it is a story of a common man who had suffered corruption which lead him to lose his wife and un-born child and he would look for his vengeance by announcing war against any sort of corruption. In the end he smilingly would embrace Capital punishment after awakening the spirit and enthusiasm in men.

That’s it for the story, which takes just couple of lines to explain. The promo’s revealed most of the story itself.  There was not too much over-hyped drama. The film was all about creating a message for the common people. We all knew about various wrong doings in our society but people like to ignore it unless and until it falls onto himself. And here is what the film makers have tried to convey a message. The film spoke about doing something beyond posting in social-media and candle marches.

Couple of weeks back we had municipal corporation election at Kolkata and I saw many status mentioning that cadres have taken over the polling booth and the person posting has declined against exercising his democratic right of voting owing to the fact that his vote will not make any impact. But didn’t likes of Bamkim Chandra taught us that little drops of water make the mighty ocean.

It’s the hypocritical world we live in and for ages we have been hypocrite. Look at history about five thousand Mughals ruled over near about a crore of Indian. Few thousand Britishers ruled over 33 crore Indians and now few corrupt people are ruling over 125 crores of people in different sphere of life and society. But we chose to close our eyes and ears. People like my HR from previous organization still remain afraid and will not going to protest about anything. People like me who get excited very easily would eventually be calmed down by mother, sister, wife, girlfriend or friends and would be taught to compromise and the few left with still summoning courage of protest would eventually give up in certain point of life. We are being taught hypocrisy at every sphere of life.

And this where the film has attempted to make an statement. An well attempted effort.

As for the acting I didn’t find anyone other than Akshay Kumar in the movie. He was good. His dialogues and actions were superb. He played a physics teacher and defied most of the principles of Physics himself. Producers put money on Akshay Kumars and Salman Khans and expect them to return the money and generally they don’t disappoint either. In the effort they look like super-heroes in the movies and that’s the way thing works. Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar works in movies where they look like demigod can do anything they want, and they don’t need to think about the stuffs they perform. It was no different. Akshay kumar and Salman khan even Mithun and Rajnikant can do any action stuff they want and they don’t require any logical explanations as they are superstars and in India they are like Gods. Sarukh Khan on the other hand can romance with each and every girl ( sometime men too!) dead living or not yet born with just spreading his arms around, it doesn’t matter even if he looks like a grandfather of the person he is romancing with.

The film was entertaining, not that great though like some of Akshay Kumar specials like Special 26 or Baby but it was quite good. It’s a movie where you can enjoy 3 hours and not something you would keep thinking about for days.

The thing that has to be appreciated is that in most of the films today the evil win over good. But this movie has tried to show that good must prevail and even if you have done something wrong fighting for the right you too have to face the consequences.

It’s not new that Akshay Kumar had been trying these sort of movies for a long time that portrays patriotism, fighting for the country and fighting for right and it has to be appreciated. Since I strongly feel that people working with films must send a message to the audience and it shouldn’t be just about entertainment and in these aspects the movie has appeared bit different to me than usual stuff.
