Movie Review: Hercules (Rock)

According to the legend, Hercules was the son of Zues, who realised his true potential once he had accepted that he was son of God. But this movie, directed by Brett Ratner, seems to be portraying him as a superhero and don’t give a definite answer on whether he was a Demi God or not. He was shown as a leader; a beast of a man. Very strong, however, not immortal as he bleeds when he is hurt like an ordinary man. And the legends that associated him was shown to be made up.

The film shows Hercules, played by Dwayne Johnson, as a leader of a band of mercenaries. I am unaware if there was such myth associated with rockoriginal Hercules somewhere, as he was known for 12 Herculean tasks and not some pirate raid. But here he was seen helping king Lord Cotys defending his empire from bloodthirsty warlord Rheseus. Hercules fought and defeated them only to realise that Cotys was wrong. Hercules made amends of his mistake and fought an entire army of Cotys finally killing him and the soldiers accepted his supremacy.

That’s it for the story. The war sequences were great though. But honestly the film disappointed me. For like any superhero Hercules was physically strong but emotionally venerable. Hercules was tricked kill his own sons. That though was shown in the movie but just mere mention was made. There was very little approach to show the venerable side of Hercules. The pain of a Demi God was missing.

Hercules was a beast of a man so is Rock. But Rock looked more like an gladiator and not as an God. Though I might be accused of being a racist but how can Hercules who hailed from Greece be black. I am unable to understand it.
