The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is a 2014 epic fantasy by Warner Bros based on novel “The Hobbit” by J.R.R Tolkien. It’s the third and the final part of the series.

The film though is based on the novel “The Hobbit” Warner Bros like their previous projects “Lord of the Rings” and “Harry Potter” series has manipulated the movie quite a deal.

Hobbit-Battle-of-Five-Armies reviewFirst Hobbit doesn’t have Legelas in it but his role was accommodated in the movie. There was a romantic angle attached to Gandulf. Also an romantic angle between a “Dwarf” and “Elf” was shown. And all these inclusions somehow didn’t make the movie interesting. Instead lot of important things were not properly highlighted.

Warner Bros though has an obsession for trilogy. But Hobbit could have been very well completed in two movies. Hobbit is not as large as Lord of the Rings.

The Plot :

The film stats with Smaug, the dragon after being driven out of the lonely mountains by the Dwarfs attacked and destroyed Laketown, when finally Bard killed the dragon and it fall on the fleeing master of the Laketown killing him as well. Bard became the new leader of the Laketown and led the people of the village into the ruins of the Dale. Thorin got effected by dragon sickness as he desperately tried to search for the Arkenstone, the stone of the king.

On the other front Gandalf was captured by the orcs at DolGuldur. He was rescued by Galadriel, the elvish queen, Elrond, Saruman, the white wizardRadagast, the wizard who stays in the company of the animals. Radagast escorted Gandalf as the others fought Raingwraiths or the Dark Raider. Sauron the dark lord also came in the scene only to be banished by Galadriel.

The Hobbit The Battle of the Five ArmiesGandalf then reached Erebor and warned about Orcs invasion under Azog.Thranduil, the king of one of the Elvish clan marched Erebor to get his share of the gold in the mountains. He didn’t pay any heed to Gandalf’s warning. He wanted to march with his army in the misty mountains. Bard’s failure attempts to pursue Thorin to get a fair share of the wealth of the mountains for the reassertions of the people of the Laketown village, it seems only matter of time before Elvish and human army would attack Thorin. But all of sudden Bilbo came and handed Arkenstone to Bard so as they can negotiate it with Thorin. He informed that he took the stone as his 14th share promised to him. Next day they marched to the mountain and offered Thorin a negotiation. Bilbo told Thorin that it was he who took the stone and handed them. Angry Thorin wanted to kill Bilbo but timely intervention of Gandalf saw Bilbo safe. It was then, the Dwarf King Dain, cousin of Thorin marched the scene with his large army in Thorin’s aid. He challenged the human and the Elves. But it was then the Orcs attacked and the Dwarfs got ready to fight them. The Elves joined them, the human followed. And when it seemed the combination of wizard, hobbit, elf, human and dwarfs, the five armies were winning the Orcs attacked from other fonts. Therewere heavy casualties. The dwarfs inside the caves urged Thorin to join the war . But he stayed obsessed with the gold. But finally he joined the armies and the combination of five armies gained momentum. Thorin went for the leader of the Orcs Azog, with whom he had an old score to settle. Fili and Kili sons of Thrin’s sister were killed by the Orcs. Thorin fought and killed Azog but he died as well in the battle. Beorn, Radagast the wizards appear in the scene with the eagles. And finally the Five Armies were victorious.

It’s an wonderful story when you read the book. Its an immortal piece of work written some 70 years back. But the movie was really disappointing particularly if you have read the book. The emotions were not properly the-hobbit-battle-of-five-armies-poster-top-108594portrayed. We loved Arragon because his character was developed very well in Lord of the Rings but though Throin equally brave and obsessive as well as egoistic his character was not built properly. Beorn was shown only in a single scene in 3 movie series though he has a significant role. The answer to why eagles helped Gandalf and his associates still remains a mystery after 3 LORT and 3 Hobbit movies. For the audience the chief of the eagles were friends with Gandalf.

Coming back to the movie, I can say Lord of the rings and Harry Potter was one of the best movie series I have seen, but Hobbit another project of Warner Bros left me disappointed.

The special effects were good. Sir Ian McKellen was loveable as usual. Bilbo played by Martin Freeman looked cute and loveable. Richard Armitage playing Thorin was good.
