Tamil filmmaker Balu Mahendra dies at 74

Veteran Tamil filmmaker Balu Mahendra has passed away at the Vijaya Hospital in Chennai on Thursday. He was 74.

Tamil filmmaker Balu Mahendra dies“Following a heart attack, he was admitted to the hospital this morning. He was later shifted to Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he passed away an hour later,” IANS quoted a hospital source.

The five time National Awards winner, cinematographer turn director Balu had won his first National Award for directing Kannada film Kokila in 1976. He has directed several cult films including Moondram Pirai, Sandhya Raagam, Veedu and Thalaimuraiga.

He has directed few popular Hindi movies including  Kamal Hassan-Sridevi starrer classic Sadma.
