Yash Chopra Dies of Dengue Fever

Yash Chopra, the renowned film director and producer, died today (21st Oct 2012) because of Dengue fever. He was 80.

He was born in Lahore on 27th September 1932.

Yash Chopra married Pamela Singh 1n 1970. They have two sons. The elder son Aditya Chopra (1971) is also a producer and director. He is also the Vice chairman and General Manager of Yash Raj Films. His second son Uday is an actor who started his acting career in 2000 with Aditya’s film Mohabbbatein.

B.R.Chopra is his elder brother.

Yash Chopra started his film career in 1956 as Asistant Director for the film Ek Hi Rasta (direcred by his brother B.R.Chopra). He was Assistant Director for two more films Naya Daur and Sadhna produced in 1957 and 1958 respectively.

He started his career as a Director with the film Dhool Ka Phool in 1959. Some of the other films directed by him are Waqt (1965), Daag (1973), Joshila (1973), Deewar (1975), Kabhie Kabhie (1976), Silsila (1981), Chandni (1989) and Veer Zara (2004).

Yash Chopra set up Yash Raj Films in 1971 and made his foray into film production with Daag (1973). He produced over 50 films.

Yash Chopra announced in September 2012 that his latest film Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012) would also be his last and that he would henceforth devote himself to Yash Raj Films and his personal life.

Yash Chopra was honoured with the prestigious “Padma Bhushan”  by the Government of India in 2005.

His films Dil To Pagal Hai and Veer Zara received the National Film Award for Best Popular Film in 1998 and 2005 respectively.

He received the Filmfare Best Director Award four times: in 1965, 1969, 1973, and 1975 for his films Waqt, Ittefaq, Daag and Deewar respectively.

Four of his films received the Filmfare Best Movie Award: Lamhe (1991), Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge (1993), Dil To Pagal Hai (1997) and Veer Zara (2004).

Yahs Chopra received the Filmfare Power Award for three consecutive years: 2006, 2007 and 2008.  He was awarded the Dada Saheb Phalke Award in 2001.

Yash Chopra received several national and international honours too.
