Priyanka Chopra: the brand ambassador for Benarsi sarees

To boost Weaver industry, the textile ministry on Wednesday announced Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra as the brand ambassador of Benarsi sarees.

After a meeting with the Varanasi weavers, the Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, Johra Chatterjee said, “She (Priyanka) won’t only be the brand ambassador but will also help Benarsi sarees gain prominence in the fashion world,”

“Handloom products of Varanasi will be promoted on a massive scale,” she added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a special focus on Weaver community in the recent budget. Finance minister Arun Jaitley announced special allocation of funds for the handloom sector as well as proposed setting up a facilitation centre and a craft museum to promote handloom products of Varanasi and other textile mega clusters.
