‘A Romantic Waddle Walk’ – Short Story by Abhishek Chatterjee

The chronic flow of tear drops was oozing out from the dark face of the sky. It was tending to somberness with every passing second as I was standing in my balcony waiting for her accession.

A vague thought jolted into my mind, “Was it a dream? Even if, it isn’t, she is just way too cuter to date a zombie like me. But then she promised me that she will be here, celebrating this Diwali eve with me………..”

A Romantic WalkShe …. She is my best friend … my sanjukta … the blissful beauty, who is beyond my scope for any description.

“Errrr…. Maybe she has postponed her advent and might also have forgotten our so called consent let along keeping her promises alive. Am wasting my time huhh….!!! ”

“Heeeiiiiii, waiting for someone huh?” A sweet, euphonious feminine voice echoed from behind interrupting my pessimistic thoughts.

As I looked back, a familiar picturesque magical smile welcomed me. That smile, I still believe the best sight in this world. Those big, round innocent eyes. They could sweep anyone off their feet.

“Oh… uuuuuu!!!??!!!” I was astonished as I screamed out of bewilderment.

“Yeah, I promised, remember? And the promises are meant to be kept.” She proclaimed with an amiable smile.

“Hmmm…. But the delay in your arrival was depleting my hopes about your coming. So finally done with your work?” I instantly enquired with a cocksure smile on my face for the first time since the morning.

“Yeah …  finally!! ’’ She replied with firm expressions accompanying a mollifying embrace.

I wonder how perfectly some things are understood when you let yourself to feel them…

I have been told that the best and the most beautiful things in this world cannot be seen or even heard, but must be felt with the heart. That touch of her skin made me realize these words.

I still remember it felt like the first sunrise after hundreds of new moons. That one fraction of moment was as if… as if my heart had suddenly been stopped for a second and then it started to beat again.. and as if it had rained after a decade of drought ….

She enlivened me after such a long span of anticipation.

“Let’s go outside Na and see the outer adornments?” She insisted and soon she held my arm authoritatively & dragged me outside.

I loved that “Na” in the tail of her sentences as it encompasses an inherent desi touch. It’s a treat to come across such innocence.

After some time of substantial flirting and elated journey, we reached our destination “Metro Junction Mall “. It was the first time that I saw the entire mall with my girl by my side.

Within couple of minutes, on our sweet and dallying journey we checked out many stores and showrooms so as for some sort of window shopping for the upcoming occasion, then instantly something caught her attention as she noticed some gathering in the open area of the mall.

Soon as we reached there, we saw a vast gathering in the opening space of the mall.

“Hey! What’s happening there? So much of crowd….. ” she said almost instantly.
And again I felt apprehend by her wish and accompanied her to that crowd.

“Wowwwwwww!!! A cracker show…. it is an obvious reason for such a gathering………… I never came across such a view. It’s beautiful, come lets go further to get a better view”, she ordered commandingly and before I could have uttered a word she dragged me with her.

“How beautiful the cracker combination seems to be with such colorful lighting effects” she exclaimed with joy as she seemed captivated and joyous by those spectacular fireworks.

Diwali celebrations with my dream girl by my side on this very auspicious eve laid me with a plenty of pleasure mingles with majestic charm ahead as because of her mere presence. Life can’t be much better than this.

\I felt deeply contented as I never felt before…..

I was enjoying the journey through the lane of my pensive thoughts after being transitioned by her view, when she broke my single mindedness….

“Hey!! Are u here or somewhere else?” She asked expressionless as she was done with that cracker show.

Before I could have answered she hauled me towards the exit.

“Chalo Na, let’s go, it is getting late, everyone must be waiting for us” she said with a pinch of worriedness in her tone.

“It’s okay ma’am!! We will reach on time” I assured.

But then, as we were about to made an exit from the mall, it started drizzling again …

Seeing the drizzle, she completely forgot the urge to go home early. It seemed like we switched our places, now I was worried about going home and she was the one, who was literally enjoying the view.

I really never understood the bonding between girls and rain, well now I do as “Both are unpredictable” and for the time being, I was trapped in between both of them.

During this single handed mental talk with myself, I lost sight of her, she was nowhere to be seen, and I panicked.

After few agitated seconds of search, finally I spotted her outside the mall enjoying the rain drops.

As I was observing her enjoyment, she noticed me.

“Hey, why are you standing there, idle? Come Na, see how soothing these raindrops will make you feel” she proclaimed with ecstasy.

But I was satisfied by the mere view of her, being happy and enjoying like a l’il baby.

“Naah, you enjoy dear. Am not into such things” I replied reluctantly.

“U know, Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning how to dance in the rain. I just love this rain fall. It’s so romantic. Come Na…“She shouted again.

“Arrreeeeee… am not coming, you go n dance if you want to. It’s the festive occasion n I don’t wanna get into any trouble. I would rather watch you from distance” I mocked.

“Ahaahh… I was not asking you to dance here; I was just… Leave it. Am coming in few minutes” she lamented with infuriation.

She headed towards the opposite way to where we have to go in such a stormy weather, enthralling me in vacillate. As she walked away, I felt mortified. It seemed like there was some sort of revenge mastering behind that wildness possess of weather that day, which was pouring in form of rain and blowing so as to cause devastation.

Then suddenly, something took hold of me, n I… I ran behind her, after some time of protest against that storm and rain I finally located her, struggling to wipe off her wet hairs from her face with one hand, while clutching an umbrella with the other. The gust of the wind was so unyielding that both the umbrella and the hair found it difficult to stay at their proper places.

The thunderbolt induced by the clashing of clouds and the roadside lights coming from the opposite direction were enough to give me a glimpse of her, even though there was darkness prevailing everywhere. She looked stunning from a few yards away.

Had I been a rhymester, I would have contrasted her phiz to the moonlight falling on the snowy pearl upon the gloomy ocean.

But then, I am not a rhymester, so I would rather put it in simple words….

“She was looking exquisitely mesmerizing …tender like an angel  … I felt like as if my world has ceased to exit……..”

The vagaries of the incumbent weather played on her nerves as she struggled with the umbrella shoving out of her hands and she seemed to follow it in dismay. Seeing this, the first thought that hovers in my mind is to run behind her and do her a sweet favor of holding back the umbrella.

I approached towards her as I felt an irrepressible urge to be there at her side. She noticed me approaching towards her; but pretended as if she did not.

That’s the worst quality of girls who know that they are beautiful.

“See, I asked you to not to roam around in such a dusky weather… Now it seems like someone needs my help 🙂 ?” I insinuated with a scornful smirk curving across my face.

“No thanks, I am fine and I can avail help by myself” she retorted bluntly and continued her brawl with umbrella and the blowing winds were accompanied by some downpour.

As soon as she realized it’s irresolvable for her to win the brawl, she approached towards the parking area to get a shelter.

As the rain begins to pour heavier than before, I thought it would be better if I too get some shelter.

“Am sorry yaar, lemme explain…“ I screamed while following her.

“Go away!!!” she muttered.

“Hey don’t walk hurriedly; it’s too slippery… please…” I pleaded.
The floor was glistening due to persisting downpour. It was perilous to stroll there but putting all these factors in a cold bag she persisted with her jaunty walk and as a consequence she slipped…

“Holly crap…! “ I rushed to hold her from falling down n then….

As Soon as I hold her…

I experienced a swift rush of adrenalin surging within me. It was… as if gallons of blood were dashing up n down my nerves, choking them, and inflating my muscles inside. My hands grew cold, even colder than the chilled tear drops falling down the gloomy sky.

She came like a squall n wrapped me in her arms. I felt her… felt her soft skin in my embrace… felt her breath merging with mine…her syrupy fragrance is becoming more n more intoxicating than ever…. she then held me tight and reposed her phiz on my right shoulder. The warmth of her body shoved away the lurking within me. That acquitted embrace evaporated every lingering pessimistic thought from my psyche…

After a long time I was in a woman’s arms. It felt like an absolute bliss.

As I was busy fondling her alluring charm, an abrupt thunder broke my melancholic solitude and may be of her as well. Instantly, it seemed like a slight jerk was induced in her body with some mixed pinches of gentle fear and anxiety in her eyes. Her attractive eyes were conveying numerous subtle emotions at the same time. And as an upshot soon conveyed her to make herself free from my arms, and in response, obeying her, I did the same.

“Ahemm, I think we should proceed for home as all of them must be expecting our arrival” I tried to initiate a conversation after that awkward silence span.

“Yes, it is getting really late, let’s go” she almost whispered.

And soon we persisted with our walk towards home.

The beautiful sky and the clement drizzle witnessed our destined romantic session.

“Hey” she said casually

“Huh!! Yes” only this much I was able to utter instantly.

Her voice served as jerk which brought me to the reality again, as I was immersed in my thoughts.

And the reality at that time was reflecting that finally we have reached home.

“Let’s go inside” she said n I followed her like a puppy as now up to some extent she held my authority.

We entered.

I don’t know why but I wished to hold her hand at that moment but then trashed the idea.

As we entered, we saw everyone was busy gossiping and chatting.

I don’t know why, but everything seemed to be neoteric as I stepped into the dining hall. I liked the ambiance of the room. The sofa and the chair surrounding the center table at one-end of the room; the TV set at the opposite end, few chairs were scattering here n there with adjacent untidy tables conveying the emblems of post-lunch session.

“OH shit, you guys are totally drenched… Why didn’t you wait till the rain stops” Dad said with a worried face.

“No uncle, am alright. Have to rush now… Mom won’t eat until I reach there!” she replied.

“What??? NOWWW…… you can’t go right now… I mean not now… I need to say….” I pleaded…

“Am sorry Abhi, please try to understand… I will meet you tomorrow promise…” she asserted with a quick embrace and n disappeared in a fraction of a second, leaving me in the darkness of cynicism….

I was still in the dreamy illusive world; the touch of her soft skin had transported me within. I had never thought of a mere handshake to be that much overwhelming…

I badly wanted to make her stay as she was the only one who could have comforted me in my loneliness. But the impact was so massive that I was unable to utter anything.

I was left in a jolt, watching her go away….

And consequently, I also proceeded towards my room, I didn’t feel any need to lit up the room, instead I sat on the bed in that same wet attire sprouting my tender thoughts so as to express my craving for her…..
~I held a jewel in my arms,
                                                        And went to sleep,
The night was cool and winds were prosy
                                                       I said “Twill Keep”
I woke and chide my honest arms
                                                     The gem was gone
                                         And now an amethyst remembrance
                                                            Is all I own~

And slowly my body was swept to an alluring world of dreams, where she was with me, where we were not apart anymore, where she completely belonged to me in every possible way with her sweet appeal and magnetism………
