The Grownup by Gillian Flynn

A woman, trying to make her living as a psychic to the world but also is a sex worker on the side. She mostly makes her living as a psychic by telling people what they want to hear. Her belief in ghosts is far from real. Our unnamed narrator goes about her life in the same monotonous manner until one day Susan Burke walks into her life. Our narrator sees Susan as a rich woman who is clearly bored with her life and would do anything for a tinge of drama. She learns later that Susan already has more drama in her life than one could hope for.

Susan has moved into the city just a year ago with her husband and stepson Miles, into an old Victorian house. When Susan asks our narrator to visit the old house as she believes some supernatural incidents are taking place there, our narrator changes her mind about her belief in ghosts. She also finds Susan’s stepson Miles to be quite disturbed and eerie in a way as to him being the source behind the supernatural incidents. Soon, Susan, Miles and our Unknown narrator are entrapped in a frightening battle as to discover if true evil is truly lurking about in the house, and if it is, then is there any way to escape it? Or is it, like everything else terrifying and evil, inevitable?

The Grownup, by Gillian Flynn is sure to be a twisted one, like her previous book, the award winning, Gone Girl. Gillian Flynn has you wondering till the end. You come up with ten possible outcomes on the base of the story so far and the climax turns out to be an eleventh outcome which hadn’t occurred to you which spins your head even more. Gillian Flynn is an American author, screenwriter and comic book writer. She was also a former television critic for entertainment weekly. She has written many short stories and three novels, one of which has been turned into a major motion picture.

Gillian Flynn is a name which most of us associate with the novel or movie Gone Girl. The movie and book has received enough praise that I don’t need to say much more. It’s dark, twisted and unimaginable circumstances are shown but at the same time it blows your mind away. The two other books that she has published are Dark Places and Sharp Objects. The Grownup will definitely not disappoint, and most of us are hoping for the same gory and gruesome stuff as we saw in Gone Girl.

About Sprightly Spirit

“I dare do all that may become a man. Who dares more is none”. And all, may be. It may be the vigor. Or the spirit. Or the courage to avoid being “politically correct” or bent. And, ban all averse with immaculate overture of graciously fathomable words firm in views. Subtle. Justifying the undying conscience. Values. Knowledge. And, dares to stay true. True to own. True to the world. And, to the words. With a dream in eyes it exists. In you. In me. In all. The sprite that never shies away. The spirit that never dies!
