Jnanpith Award Winning Poet Shahryar Passed Away

Noted Urdu poet Akhlaq Mohammad Khan (75) aka Shahryar died in Aligarh on Monday after battling lung cancer. Shahryar won India’s highest literary honour Jnanpith Award in 2008.

His son Faredoon said,”He passed away around 8.30 pm Monday. My elder brother was with him when he breathed his last.”

Shahryar is famous lyricist of ‘Umrao Jaan’. Songs like ‘Dil cheez kya hai aap meri jaan lijiye’, ‘In aakhon ki masti ke mastaane hazaron hain’ is still popular.
