Famous writer and social activist Mahasweta Devi passes away

The Sahitya Akademi awardee and eminent social activist Mahasweta Devi today passed away in Kolkata after prolonged illness. She was 90.

“She passed away at 3.16 p.m. following a cardiac arrest and multi-organ failure,” her doctor announced the news.

In her tribute, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote in tweeter, “India has lost a great writer. Bengal has lost a glorious mother. I have lost a personal guide. Mahashweta Di rest in peace.”

She won numerous awards throughout her life for her contribution to literature and social welfare including Jnanpith, Magsaysay, Padmashree and Padma Vibhushan.

In her over 7 decades of career, she wrote near about 100 novels and 20 short story collections and numerous editorials and journals. Her famous books were Hazar Churashir Ma, Rudali, Bioscoper Baksho, Chatti Munda O Tar Tir and Aranyer Adhikar.

Mahasweta Devi was the voice of oppressed and marginalised People. She relentlessly worked for the betterment of the tribals’ welfare and development.

Dear Mahasweta Devi, you will always live in our heart “Till the Words Live. Rest In Peace, Ma’am”.
