Originally titled Suishi and published in 2009, Nobel-Prize winner Kenzaburo Oe’s Death by Water translated by Deborah Boliner has been nominated for Man Booker Prize this year.

In Death By Water, famous author Kogito Choko, who can be seen as Oe’s alter-ego moves back to his village to complete his last novel about his father. He gets hold of a red suitcase that supposedly holds all the secrets and undisclosed facts about his father’s life. As he sits to write down, the details provided by the documents inside the suitcase proves insufficient. He then, meets an avant-grade theatre group and his pen starts picking up.
