Tram 83 by Fiston Mwanza Mujila
Country: Democratic Republic of Congo/Austria
Translated by Roland Glasser

Fiston Mwanza Mujila was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1981, and now lives in Graz, Austria. He is a francophone and a distinguished poet. His debut novel Tram 83 has been nominated for the Man Booker Prize this year.

Tram 83 is set somewhere in The Democratic Republic of Congo, as Lucien, is a writer whose works have been censored which makes him travel from “Back-county” to an unnamed city/state in search of refuge. Refuge comes in the form of Requiem, who is a kind of a gangster of sorts. Both of them frequently visit Tram 83 to unwind. Lucien meets Ferdinand Malingeau at Tram 83, who agrees to publish his work. The lives and actions of these three characters interact in weird ways to make a comical and cynical representation of the global life that we try to live.

About Rit Chattapadhyay

A student of literature, I was born in Kolkata, now, reside at Howrah. I completed my high school from St.Thomas' Church School Howrah, and then went on to study English Honours at Asutosh College. Presently, I am pursuing my Masters in English Literature from Calcutta University. Not an avid reader from childhood. My experience with literature intensified in high school and Asutosh College. I love reading works of literature and I am an amateur poet myself. My poems mainly highlight the agonies of modern existence and the complications of love. Being a very opinionated person, I bear distinct opinions about what I read.
