“Making a Poem” – A Review

What is a poem?

The Oxford dictionary of English language defines poem as this – a piece of writing in which the expression of feelings and ideas is given intensity by particular attention to diction (sometimes involving rhyme), rhythm, and imagery. The word ‘poem’ finds its origin in a Greek word ‘poema’ which means to create!

So is a poem all about the imagination of a person being noted in a sheet of paper? Certainly not. And that is why a person who hasn’t tasted life finds it difficult to string together even a few lines of poetry!

This is where Vihang A Naik’s “Making a Poem” comes into being! How to write a poem? Is there a particular manual for it? Mr. Naik’s 48-page anthology finds an answer to these complex questions. Throughout this mini anthology, the poet has penned down some incredible pieces of poetry. Once a reader goes through the entire book, the person will realize that poetry is eventually a result of all the observations and the experiences of life taken together and woven with the imagination of the creator.

Analysing the mechanism of this poetry book, what struck me as a reader was certainly the way the poems were segregated into 5 sections – Are You Looking for that Poet?, A Poet as a Young Man, Making Poem, A Poem Comes Alive and A Poet. And in these 5 sections, the poet has shown how a poet is born. Like a child growing up from its mother’s womb and taking birth and growing up to be a proper human being, the journey of a poet also takes its own path where there is a twist or a turn on every step. So it can be derived that, to become a poet, one has to live life to its fullest, gather experience and then nurture it before eventually penning it down almost in a way a mother looks upon her child. With all the care and love towards life taken together eventually a poet takes birth!

Poetry is certainly going through a revival at this moment. Age old processes no more remain to be the manual to write poetry. In that sense, Naik’s “Making A Poem” is certainly a pathbreaking one. Kudos to the writer for chosing poetry to eke out a manual of how to create a poem. He could have easily chosen the more conventional way of prose to convey his message but he didn’t. And that’s where the success of the creator lies.

So do not waste your time in contemplating and grab a copy for yourself! Because later you just miss out on a poetic journey of “Making A Poem”.
