Book Review: Roots

“It is alright to cry,” says a soothing voice from the Helpline to a distraught soul on the other side.

Have you ever thought how life must be for those who battle with loneliness, grief or depression, almost everyday, due to some reason or the other, and have nobody to share their feelings with? It is certainly disturbing when things clog and cutter deep inside and your feelings pile up and remain unexpressed.

RootsRahulBhatt_1455348980Seconds after Rashmi utters those lines on the call she gets at the Helpline, the caller, a complete stranger, finally lets out his choked emotions, as they come to fore, filling the line with his sobs. There are several things that cause disturbance and stress in our life. While some find a way out, others push it aside, without realizing it is not a sollution.

‘Roots by Rahul Bhatt’ revolves around the lives of Rashmi – Sarita outside the Helpline centre – who relieves many of her callers from stress and sheds light on the root of their problem; her kind-off typical mother, who, on a one hand is like her friend, but also rants against her work and pesters her with the topic of her marriage, and of course, the priest named Ganesh, who also happens to be an astrologer, making money out of predicting others’ future, but is himself unaware of the “strange twist” that fate has woven into his life.

‘Roots by Rahul Bhatt’ is a highly mesmerizing tale and a treat indeed to those who love engrossing fictions.

Rahul Bhatt is one genious of a person — and I mean it. This story just sucks you into it and the curiousity only elevates as the story progresses.

The start of the story is a little hurly-burly, and continues to remain so unless characters and their details settle into memory. Two to four chapters down and you might feel the story is disorganized, but the curiousity that creeps in right from the start pushes you ahead, wanting to know more. Then slowly and steadily thedots begin to connect and the reality flashes through your mind.

But I must say that the characters do lead to quite a quandry in the course of reading, especially in the first few chapters. One may have to flip to and fro to not lose the track. Nevertheless, the story is really mesmerizing and has a satisfying end.
